Organic Cotton Clothes
|
DID YOU KNOW...that cotton is one of the most widely grown crops in the world? Less than 3% of all arable land is used in the cultivation of cotton, yet 25% of all toxic chemicals used in agriculture are used for this one crop alone. These massive amounts of chemicals have had devestating effects on our environment as five of the nine main chemicals used on cotton are known carcinogens. Using chemicals on crops kills beneficial organisms that live in the soil, leading to soil degredation, which then leads to the need of adding chemical fertilizers. Rainwater runoff which contain some of these chemicals have comprised water supplies in various areas around the world. |

Some of the most dangerous chemicals have been banned in the developed world but are still being sold by the US, Japan, and Europe to developing nations. Serious health problems for farm workers have been recorded due to these insecticides and pesticides, including cancer and respiratory problems.
Purchasing organic clothing helps decrease the amount of pesiticides and insectices that are released into our environment each day.
There are plenty of online stores that offer a nice selection of organic cotton clothing. As the awareness spreads, many new eco-friendly fashion designers are emerging who are offering sylish and fashionalble eco-wear. Large mainstream companies like American Apparell, Levi's and H & M are becoming aware and now offer a few select organic pieces.
